 PROJECT CLOSED

Well what… Looks like I’ve done all I could and it’s time to sum up the sad, for most of you, conclusions, my friends. Nothing came of switching to CBox Pro because PayPal does not accept payments in my country. Friends wrote to me that they tried to make the translation in vain. And if everything worked out we would easily issue Pro even on both chats. But it didn't work.

The offer to become an administrator of this (not chat) blog has not yet responded (from those who shared music, of cours). Therefore, based on all that remains, unfortunately, only to close this project. Many thanks to all and separately to those who shared music with us. I’m sure it was a fun time of communication, interesting finds for many music lovers, anyway..

Summer ends, but not music ends. You can find a lot of interesting in the blogs of my friends, our blog..So I do not say goodbye, come and find Old Melodies. See you soon.

Good luck and peace to all good people.

Dmitrich

  1. Hey guys, I guess we just want to see an end to the trolling and negativity that's been happening over the last couple of weeks. If registering makes this a safe space, then so be it. We just want a resumption of normality. Much respect. SPx

  2. Thanks for providing this wonderful blog. I'm sorry that it has become stressful for you. The comments in the Chatbox have recently become pretty unpleasant. Like you, I don't understand the trolls, and the ugly back-and forth developed a fearsome momentum. If you decide you've had enough, well...Thanks for providing a super-convenient place for a lot of great music-sharing for a really long time. I hope you find a plan that works for the many blog visitors. And for YOU!

  3. Friends of Old Melodies.
Lately, the chat has become a nauseating thing, clouding the great work of "Old Melodies" in its 17 years of existence.
I completely disagree with the tone used by some petitioners and uploaders, and I'm not interested in knowing who is right. A blog should be fundamentally a place of friendship.
I wonder why the regulars who share music don't create their own site to have total control and not disturb the image on someone else's blog.
We would support the other blogs and add them to our "Friends Lists".
And those looking for music can also make the effort to search the web and ask only for what they can't find.
Using Soulseek, for example, they will find practically everything they are looking for.
I hope we all respect the many years of "Old Melodies" and that peace and harmony return to normal here, allowing us to enjoy the music. Everything else is superfluous.
    Cheers
    Jose

  4. This is, and has been, a wonderful and friendly place to visit with the added bonus of discovering music you never knew existed or finding music that you may have been searching for. I'm forever grateful to those regular posters that have shared music on here. Unfortunately there is a minority out there who sole purpose in life is to destroy and disrupt and they will no doubt be feeling pleased with themselves with the (hopefully temporary) closure of the blog. I'm happy with whatever route you decided to take to get this great blog back on track and rid it of the pond life that has infested it recently. Love to all the genuine music lovers on here and nothing but contempt for the greedy trolls.

  5. Whatever it takes to get this blog back to normal, I'm all for it. I've requested music here that I was unable to find anywhere else and surprisingly someone had it. I haven't been here long and haven't shared a ton but have shared what I had if someone was looking for it. I definately agree registration should be required to prevent the nonsense we had here recently. Looking forward to whatever you figure out Dimitri!

  6. As a new visitor ,I sense your frustration, maybe make this an registered site, all member's current and new musicahollics , to register on a private registration form(you make) for you to keep...with members legal names, username, e-mail address, the country of which they reside....And tell all members it's a 3 strike rule site,if they don't follow the rules...Bye ,Bye

  7. I think registration would be good start, but host moderation would take a lot of work. I found lots of music here from friends of the blog. It would be a shame to lose touch with them. Three strikes sounds good but is hard work. I hope you find a solution that works for you. Good luck.

  8. This is the best blog and finest bunch of amazing posters ever. One thing I have learned over the years is that good things always end.

  9. I haven't had much time lately to take notice of what's been going on in the chat and its deeply frustrating that seemingly some ingrates have screwed it up for the rest of us again.

Despite the strange name I'm using (thanks to Google blocking other of my accounts simply because it doesn't like my VPN), I've been a member of the blog since it was private and someone who has visited Old Melodies for more than a decade and it is without question the best blog I have found for North European sixties music and more generally a great place for wider sixties music to boot.

If I had a vote I would prefer Dmitrich simply turn the blog private again as it once was. I value my online privacy and anything else would potentially risk compromising that privacy. Furthermore it keeps the random trolls and other malignants from interfering with the blog

  10. Reading all the comments I find there is nothing much that hasn't been said. We would all like this wonderful blog to go back to normal, but it semms that is not possible .. I truly hope you find a solution. I have requested a few albums over these past years and someone always comes up trumps (and I alway thank the individual concerned, as we all should) I have also posted a few myself (although to be honest at 85 years old I don't understand how i did it or understand 'trackers and Soulseek'). I would add Rule number 6. Spread love not hate.

  17. Maybe ask other blogs how they operate and get ideas from there? Old Rocker has a chat box and they don't seem to have trouble. I thing Twilight zone has it right. No more than 3 albums a day posted. Nothing less than 2 years old to deflect suspicion from record companies, who can easily shut blogs down for copyright. RYP vets all posts before publishing to weed out, dodgy messages. Everything seemed to be running smoothly here until greedy people were demanding (and getting) full discographies and large box sets for free. If you want those buy them, simple as. I have spent the last 60 years buying and collecting Frank Zappa and plenty of others. I was appalled when someone asked for a full discography in one day ??!! I was even more shocked when someone provided that very thing in flac. Greed is not what sharing should be about and it should be fed by kind people. Sharing shouldn't be one sided either. Share one get one, is one way forward. If there is to be a way forward.

    1. I know the Old Rocker chat . And since there is an opportunity to insert images is a clear sign that it is CBox Pro, with the possibility of premoderation. We do not have such an opportunity, as it turned out. As for the Twilight Zone, I didn't find any chat windows there. Perhaps he was and he was rightly rejected... Because, as Roadrunner wrote - I don't use chat because of things like this, which ruin years of work.

Fulvio, DAVPET, rocklover320, rick'n'roll and many many others now I can't remember nickname were like real musical friends for me and only scroll the chat every day was like to know and see persons fallen in love with music like me! In this chatroom I knew and more often found albums for me marvelous and impossible to find elsewhere and for it I'll thank you from the deep of my heart everyone help me to find them and, most of all, Dimitri and Cor who created and took care of this amazing place... I hope YOU reconsider and YOU open again this chatroom because YOU are surely better people than those sad little men whose lives are so insignificant that they waste them trying but failing to destroy what others have built!

  33. This Blog is a great opportunity to sample things that look interesting and I'd be sad to see it go - rules for requests (and unsolicited bulk uploads!) would make things clearer, I suppose. Going 'private' would reduce the number of visitors, presumably reduce the number of posts and ultimately lead to closure if everyone has the same material. Good luck.

Dmitrich, do yourself a favor and close it down! There are too many selfish people who now complain, however they have never contributed to the blog...

    1. I'm afraid you still haven't understood anything after reading the comments... The chat was created first and foremost so that people could find what they might not have found on other resources, to exchange music and communicate. It was not a requirement to necessarily post something in exchange for requests. Those who could (everyone knows who I mean) and wanted to share music, did so, and many thanks to them for that. Personally, for me, thе idea of lending for sharing music is absurd and unacceptable. As are such forms of sharing music, when links necessarily lead to paid hosting. I hope you understand what I mean...
The problem is different. Someone started asking for too much, opening the way to trolling. In particular, in the form (with which it all began), and which you are talking about - "There are too many selfish people who now complain, however they have never contributed to the blog...".
First and again - Chat is not a blog. And how many blogs have you seen where everyone who visits it makes a contribution?
Yes, I know one blog and a few forums where you have to upload or share some music to be able to download linkses
This rules set only by the author of the resource, it is his decision. I didn't set such rules. For the rest, there is the right to accept or not accept these decisions.
A good suggestion from bulldogUK - Rule number 6. Spread love not hate. It is worth thinking about..

    2. As the origin of your quote, I don't think I've uploaded since there was a flood of "Beat-Club" episodes and people were finding it hard to keep up, so I helped out. But No, I haven't been able to post any of the items requested for ages and I've never heard of many artists - nor have I asked for anything, in fairness.
I've certainly never been tempted to post umpteen non-requested items in variable quality, just to get some kudos as a 'regular' poster.
      I remain on Dmitrich's side.

  37. Hi friends:
After reading the comments, I see that the approach isn't correct. The problem isn't the blog, which works correctly, but only the "Chat."
So I think the option to make the blog private doesn't make sense, and for those who don't know, Blogger only gives 100 invitations per private blog, so many would be unfairly left out.
As a solution to the chat, we could try giving the human race one more chance, as John Lennon said: "Give Peace a Chance." Reopen it and see if we've all learned something, and if not, close it again.
The current "chat" has many limitations, and we should find one that can moderate and delete messages.
And also look at a way to ensure that this moderation work doesn't always fall on Dmitrich, who has enough to do with the blog.
And finally, as happens in all families, the children grow up and leave the family home. One idea would be for the most active members to create their own site where they could moderate and delete messages. Blogger could be a good option, and even add more information about the albums posted. The chat feels like a grocery shopping list, and it's hard to know what each one is about. Sometimes we miss out on interesting things due to a lack of information.
I hope for more constructive feedback to save the chat.

    1. Hi Jose
Thank you for your participation and help, my friend
Of course I am not going to close the blog. This idea did not justify itself due to the limited number of readers.
As for the Chat, I have not yet been able to find a worthy alternative that would meet our requirements, at least this is pre-moderation. And so far no one has suggested options for such chats.

There is an idea - to make the Responses to Requests chat public for some participants, and to make the Requests chat Premium. In both cases, the main thing is a larger number of moderators. But this is only if I have enough patience... You are right, I am much more interested in working on my blog than being an arbitrator in the chat
In the meantime, I need a few more days to think it over and tomorrow I will open the chat windows. We will see, but I do not hope for a miracle...
And one question for those who received transfers via PayPal/
I previously, two years ago, paid for Premium for the Requests window, but I made a transfer from a card Transfer from other people is done via PayPal registered email, right? How is it done, who knows?
      ===============================================
Thanks to everyone for the comments. I 'm glad that this project brought joy to many of you. Have a nice sunny summer... Thank you.

  38. I haven't been very active in this forum, but a few times I have made requests, and people have been extremely helpful. I have also scrolled through the links posted almost everyday, and many times I have found lots of interesting music. So I can say I have really appreciated this forum, even if I've mostly "lurked in the shadows".

I sincerely hope the forum can remain alive, without charging money or making it a forum for only a limited amount of invited guests.

Of course there will always be a risk that some person will create conflicts and cause problems without reason. Unfortunatly this is the case with almost all Internet forums, and it's something we just have to live with.

Money is not for the forum, but for a Premium account in CBox. And it's a small amount of money - $20 a year. Only Premium provides moderation. But this is only one of the supposed solutions to the problem.

1. No, my friend. This is an annual subscription, either for the Premium version, or for the Pro version. The choice will depend on the response from the support service. Anyone can contribute any amount, starting from $ 1, and this goes into the general piggy bank for the annual payment. That is, having accumulated (for example) $ 20, we will receive a fully functional version of the chat with moderation and blocking for using VPN. Something like that. But for now, as I wrote, there are obstacles with blocking and I am not sure that anything will come of this idea and I will most likely abandon it.

    1. Yes, this is my concern. There were 4 or 5 regular uploaders (posting every day) and around 10 - 13 uploaders (including myself) who posted single and/or multiple uploads less frequently.

My Beatles uploads were the most popular with close to 100 downloads before the link(s) disappeared off the top of the CBox.

I have no idea how many visitors per day Old Melodies received however simple math's tell me approximately 20% are uploading for the 80% who just download without contributing. This in fact is known as the Pareto Principle or commonly known as the 80/20 rule.

So, if the 20% who upload decide to no longer continue to upload (in particular the 4 or 5 regular daily uploaders) for whatever reason, what are you 80% going to do? Are you going to then upload for the benefit of the greater community to keep the CBox/Blog going as per your wishes in your comments here? I don't think so!

IMO the community here will only survive if at least 50% regularly contribute with uploads. One cannot rely on the regular uploaders ...they have a life and should not be relied on to feed daily request demands...
